I have been blessed by Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson’s book Desperate. It has truly taught me how to “breathe” through motherhood. I am not a perfect mom, but I am working to become a better mom for my kiddos. They are precious, but they are kids! They can drive me crazy sometimes. (I think some of it is payback for all those temper tantrums I threw when I was little.)

Sarah is the real deal. She is transparent. She shares her story as a mom of young children. She’s so funny too…and her Mufasa hair! But really, she shares some of her failures and answer questions of what has worked for her in growing her “wild child.” Sally…all moms need a Sally in their lives. She shares her wisdom as a been-there done-that mom. I love her heart for moms with little ones.

Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe

My Facebook feed has been exploding with updates of new babies born every month for the past few years. I have a lot of new mama friends out there. Yes, there are lots of cuddly moments. And sweet smells after bathtime. And first smiles. And how wonderful it feels when all they want to do is hold onto your finger so tightly with little fists. You are their whole world. But, motherhood can definitely a roller coaster ride. Some real updates seen in my FB feed:

“I thought I had a bad night the night before last, then T proves it can always be worse. From 11 PM on he didn’t want to go back down, up for 30 minutes to an hour each time then when he did go back down he’d be back up in an hour. I feel like I might die this morning.”

“All three kids @ home for a few hours = House trashed.”

“My youngest has had poop explosions up his back in every outfit I’ve put him in for the last 24 hours. Sigh….And while our youngest is pooping all over himself, our oldest is arguing with us because he wants to wear long sleeves and a jacket on a 72-degree day. The joys of parenting.”

And here’s my very own desperate mom FB update: “Last night included driving across the bridge back home in the POURING rain with 2 very sick children who continued to make a mess of the toilet for another 2 hrs (after making a mess of the car) and then took turns waking me up throughout the night until 5am.”

I remember the early days when the girls were infants. There were lots of challenges that I faced. Now, as I move into the season of being a mom of a preschooler and school age kid, there are still challenges. At our MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) steering retreat on Saturday, as we went around to share our prayer requests, even the mentor moms requested prayer for how to relate with their grown kids. Wow, this motherhood thing is hard stuff! I love the quote from Sarah Mae (see above). The challenges may never completely go away as our kids grow and as we grow, but IT GETS BETTER! As moms, young and old, we need each other. We don’t have to do this alone. Reading Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson‘s book Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe has been so refreshing. It is so wonderful to read the dialogue between a mom with young kids and a been-there-done-that mom who sees beyond the diapers and sleepless nights. There is HOPE.
