My Un-Cluttered Thoughts

I think it was February of last year when the local consignment store closed. My friends were all frustrated that there wasn’t any place in town to consign their stuff. I didn’t consign stuff, or have yard sales, or anything like that (I just like to give stuff away), but I was hoping to find a solution to my friends’ problem. So, this is not typical of me, but I had posted a few things onto my own Facebook timeline a few months before that, and people seemed to like the idea of how easy it was to just post and have someone buy or take an item. I started an online swap/sell group. And I am amazed at this community that is now almost 450 members. People are able to sell their stuff and earn a little money, others are able to give away items (sometimes brand new with tags), and still others who are searching for items are able to get them at a low price or sometimes free! And we have used it to raise funds for charity. It is just an awesome place. If you are on social media, you will probably find a similar group near you.

Clutter Free Challenges

One of our challenges today is to declutter the pantry. This is a black hole at our house. Our pantry is just another one of our cabinets with all the extras. Along with not being able to cook well from the freezer and microwave, I am also not great at cooking things from a can. hahaha! Now you’re wondering if I can even cook at all. :p Well, Trader Joe’s has been really good to us… Okay, I will need to start posting What We’re Eating posts again soon. Anyhow, this is one place where clutter does pile up, so I need to be careful with what goes in, and knowing the dates of when things need to go out.

21-Day Clutter Free Challenge {Day 11}

My Un-Cluttered Thoughts

My uncluttered thought is this…I should have waited until this challenge to start decluttering. :p From the photos, it doesn’t look like I am getting rid of that many things. But no matter how much I get rid of, stuff seem to multiply overnight, and things just came into the house faster than it goes out. And the more that comes in, the more I feel like I am drowning, which was a word someone else had used to describe the clutter in her life, but certainly is how I would describe it. Thankful for Kathi’s words to help me evaluate the things that are coming into my home.

This is what you see when you enter our house from the garage. I got this bookcase free from our swap & sell page and it has been great for the girls to have everything in one place when they come in to the house or when we leave…at night, we try to put things we need for the next day out so we just grab and go…so far so good. I would love better containers for the stuff on top and the shoes though. The middle shelf usually has a ton of books which we get from our weekly trips to the library, but everything except one DVD was returned yesterday.

 

So….stuffed animals…hmmm…got rid of 10 out of the 67, plus there are more in the girls’ room. I will need to get back to this one again… #clutterfree #themoysdeclutter

Clutter Free Challenges

One of our challenges today is to declutter the refrigerator. Whew! Thankful for an easy one as I gear up for some really challenging areas of our home. Decluttering the fridge is a lot simpler these days than it used to be. I have no idea why, but I am horrible at cooking anything that comes from the freezer, and anything that needs to be cooked in the microwave. So, because of this, we usually buy for the week, have leftovers for 2 days or so, do CORN (clean out refrigerator night) one night, and the fridge is empty by grocery day. From time to time, we do end up with condiments that are passed their sell by/eat by date.

Questions

“Every single item coming into our home costs us something.”
– What is the biggest cost of clutter in your life – space, time, attention, or energy?
– What is one thing you can do to reclaim part of that cost (i.e. get rid of something to regain space, set buying limits, etc.)?

My Un-Cluttered Thoughts

The girls are out mini-golfing with kids from church and @normmoy is out getting some groceries. Back to decluttering for the past hour…I chose 2 small areas to do so I can ease back into it after not feeling 100% the past few days. If you have been to our home, you would probably say our house is not cluttered, but if you see how many things I am posting in our swap & sell group, you know that it is not…it is just spread out here and there…and there is more. I am realizing more that it isn’t so much about the actual physical stuff…it is the ‘why’ behind it. Why am I holding on to something? Fear? Shame? Guilt?

Clutter Free Challenges

One of our challenges today is to clean out travel sized items to either donate to homeless shelter or toss in the trash. This brings me to a question that I see frequently asked: where can I bring ____? Where can I donate ____? Once you have put those items into the “Give Away” box, you need to have a plan so it doesn’t continue to be clutter, but just in a different spot. Find out where you can donate clothes, electronics, etc. And then give yourself a deadline for getting it out of your house or your car.

My Thoughts

Still lots to do (photos are in the bench cabinets), but this will have to do for now! Did I mention that this feels so good? 🙂 It does! Try it out. Just get rid of 30 things today…things you don’t need and don’t love. If you are not doing the challenge with me, don’t do anything else after that. Even with 30 items gone, you will feel so much better!

I actually ended up putting two bags back on top. There were some items that were claimed after I posted them during winter break. Now that Awana, homeschool group, MOPS, etc. are starting back up, I can bring them to those who were wanting the items. I will have to get back to this one soon since it stores our photos…which I need to at least put in order.

Also, the green table will never really be clutter free because it is our “creative table” where lots of arts and crafts, and playdough, and creating gets done… 🙂 I got it free off of Freecycle almost 6 years ago, and the chairs were a gift from my sister’s former students mom since her girls grew out of them, and there have been some great memories…lots of little kid (and grownup meals shared at the table too. 🙂

My Thoughts

So my brain is pretty much on overload with all things “New Year” so I took a short breather from decluttering. The next area I’m working on is our “dining room”. We don’t use it as a dining room, so it is just a big wide space for kiddos to run around in. I know there’s stuff to get rid of this area!..just need to take a short break. :p

Still truckin’ along here in the ‘dining room’ which we have just left as a wide open space for the girls and little visitors to run around. I haven’t had a chance to get to things after taking the pics, but hope to get pick up steam again tonight.

My Thoughts

I decided I needed another “easy” area to declutter because that’s just how I roll these past few days after the bigger challenges :p We only have two bathrooms in our house and both are pretty small, and I also declutter both of them often as well, so it was pretty simple. And yet again (notice a theme here? :p ), there was still stuff to get rid off! It feels so good! And yet again (another theme), I know there is probably still more things in our bathroom that we don’t need!

Before and After of our bathroom and the cabinet in the other bathroom…another room I declutter frequently, so not much change, but the back half of the big cabinet in our bathroom is empty (woohoo!)…posted never used bathroom accessories on our online virtual garage sale group and was spoken for within seconds.

My Thoughts

The kitchen is one area that I declutter quite frequently, so there’s not much change in the befores and afters above, but I did get rid of a handful of items in every single cabinet in our kitchen…and we have a lot! I was a little “stuck” in this room for awhile because we are heading back to our regular routine after the winter break.

I promise you, I have left the house this past week, but I am on a roll with the decluttering and I am not going to stop until 2000 items are gone.

My Thoughts

I made it to 201 items yesterday! I am at 255….106 of those things were from the kitchen!

Started decluttering in the kitchen a little bit yesterday. I only had a short amount of time, so added 12 decluttered items to the list. As you can see, we have tons of counterspace, cupboards, and drawers, but therein lies the problem. I want to cram it with stuff. The previous homeowner remodeled most of the house before we moved in, and I love our kitchen, but it is not exactly how I want it. We have shuffled some things around many times. It is so easy to just shove stuff into drawers when there are so many! So…here we go!

The girls were planning a New Year’s Eve party, but in-between planning, they were also decluttering. They brought over 30+ things from their room. Their room and the office are the biggest clutter magnets, so I can’t wait to get in there.

I was looking at some of our stuffed animals and I keep many of them…yes, me!..a lot of them are mine, because of some small memory attached to them. And I make up excuses why I need to keep one…the girls worked so hard to earn those tickets at Golfland for that big purple dog, I have to keep it! Well…we’ll just have to have a plan for this type of thing. Ideas? 🙂

My Thoughts

Two more days to declutter 39 things! I think I can, I think I can! I started in the kitchen yesterday, and posted a few items on our Swap & Sell group, and things will be leaving our house! I’m positive my neighbors think I’m running some kind of shady business with the amount of people that randomly stop by to pick up or drop off stuff. Some of it is stuff I could probably save and use for the future, but since that “future” is at an unknown time, I hope someone else will be blessed by it, so I don’t have to see things piling up.

Our bedroom is still a work-in-progress and there are a few areas we haven’t even dealt with, but here is a before and after of our dresser and my side table area. #clutterfree #themoysdeclutter

Chapter 5 is titled Why We Buy. As I said in a previous post (and many times before that), I don’t like shopping. But I do buy things, and sometimes, I even buy things I don’t really need. In typical Kathi-fashion, she writes about a time when she bought things…lots of things…things that she didn’t need. It’s a funny story, but not so much when I realize that I do that at times.

The problem, of course, is that buying things we don’t love or need leads us to clutter. And clutter is the opposite of where our heart should be: Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

(Note: Not saying that having things is bad. There’s lots of good stuff in the world, but if we buy it and don’t love it or need it, that might be a heart issue.)

So far there has been 149 things that will be leaving our house! I think I am finally ready to move onto another room in our house, although I’m pretty sure if I look hard enough, I will find more to remove from our bedroom. Moving onto the next room, and also cleaning out one kitchen drawer!

Day 2 is done! I didn’t declutter much since there were other house tasks to complete and we had guests over. See our wild game of Headbandz going on? Actually, I think M was just reading the rules. We are slowly but surely making our way to 201 items gone! Chapter 3 of Clutter Free was awesome (top left pic) and Chapter 4 is making me think more on why there is clutter in our home. Why do I hold on to certain things? Should I hold on them?

Kathi challenged us to write down the things we buy and how we feel after buying them. As many of you know, I am not a shopper, so I am hoping this is an easy task for me, although even I can simmer down on buying unnecessary items “just because”. If you love to shop or collect things, I hope this habit will help you decide if you really need something before you make a purchase.

Every single item coming into our home costs us something: It costs us space. It costs us time. It costs us attention. It costs us energy.

I don’t know about you, but my space, time, attention, and energy are limited, and I would love to make good use of it. Next year during winter break, I hope I will not be going through stuff to get rid of, but enjoying my family and friends a whole lot more!
