For the Holidays: More Than Candy

DSC_0695bWe’ll be featuring some of our favorite things if you need Christmas gifts/activities ideas.
(Disclaimer: Affiliate links are in this post. We personally own and love the things we recommend. We are in this season where we are trying to live more simply, so we know that if you are in the same boat, it is sometimes hard justifying buying anything else! Norm and I have many wonderful memories from our childhood, and with our family now, that don’t involve “things” and “stuff,” because we just enjoy being together. But gifts seem to just happen during the holiday season (and birthdays too), so we want to share some things that we like having in our lives. Any purchases made using the links will give us a percentage to use toward gifts for our sponsored children Solissa and Lucnise. Thank you!)

MoreThanCandyCover-1More Than Candy – If you have been around these parts long enough, you have heard the name Sarah Mae. I was a part of her Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe launch team, and have shared the great Discipline and Discipleship eCourse (Click here to view more details) that she done with Sally Clarkson (super mentor mom!). Well, it is not surprise that Sarah has a great resource for us for the holidays. Her ebook More Than Candy has some fabulous ideas on how we can make Christmas count this year. Each day gives us an action that we can take to bless those around us and our families during this busy and sometimes commercial holiday season.

truthinthetinsel_300-250Truth in the Tinsel – As we prepare for a somewhat busy season of the year, the parties, meal prep, gifts, decorating, etc., can be overwhelming enough that you don’t want to think about adding an extra task to your to-do list. It might be December 25th by the time we realize that we haven’t even talked about Jesus as we are celebrating the day of His birth! The gifts and cookies are fun, but I would love for my kiddos to also remember why we have this holiday at all – Jesus! Enter, Amanda’s ebook, Truth in the Tinsel! There are 24 days of Scripture reading, ornament crafts, and other activities, that point us to Jesus as the reason for the season. If you don’t have time to do the ornament crafts, there are Printable Ornaments available. You can also purchase this ebook in Spanish (La Verdad en el Oropel). For tips on how to use Truth in the Tinsel with your preschooler(s), check out THIS POST with a great video by Amanda. If you would like to purchase for church use, there is also a Church Curriculum. It is sure to be great with Amanda’s background and involvement in children’s ministry.

Hope Begins Here Fabric Wreath

These past few months I have been memorizing 1 Peter 1. I saw the words but at the same time I didn’t really see them.

Here are some of the words I memorized: “Knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold.” This is how NIV words it: “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors.” {1 Peter 1:18} What does that even mean? What does it mean to be redeemed?

During this Christmas season we can find reminders of this word “redeemed”. Really? All I see is the gift wrap and tinsel…and that partridge in a pear tree. Look again. You see it on the Christmas tree, the star which brought the wise men to the manger. You hear it in the songs that are sung, “Joy to the world, the Lord is come.” You see it on your traditional Christmas lights tour in the neighborhoods, the lights are bright…shining “Peace on Earth”. You see it on the nativity scene on the mantels, the baby asleep on the hay.

That baby grew up. He is Jesus. He died on a cross. God has given us this greatest gift. He was given to redeem us. There’s that word. Redeem. It is not first word that pops into your head at the mention of Christmas, but there it is! In Him we find redemption. We are reminded. He is our Redeemer.

Other versions of 1 Peter 1:18 use the words rescued, saved, set free from

Melody loves to flip the page to the next day at the end of each night before bed. 🙂
